Hi all
Need info for lodging on the Mississippi River in IA, IL and WI . My sister and I (mid 60s)
would like to stay on the river, or at least close enough to see it. Would really like a place with outdoor space to sit, drink wine and watch the river traffic. Can't afford a luxury place, probably, but I guess we could consider it, depending. We usually like smaller places, real clean and close enough to restaurants to walk.
All info appreciated.

We stayed in one of these cabins in Fountain City, Wi and really liked it. Very calm and peaceful. We stayed in October and because the leaves had fallen we had a great view. Lot of train traffic but we found it fascinating.

Look at the Trempealeau Hotel in Trempealeau, WI. You can sit outside, drink wine and eat and watch the river traffic (and train traffic) without even leaving the hotel. The rooms on the second floor are very reasonable and the food is good. The only thing that I would mention....if you end up with a room on the river side you will hear barge and train traffic, and have spotlights (from the barges because there is a lock right there)in your room all night. I love the place but didn't get much sleep on that side of the building.
Check out the Kingsley Inn in Fort Madison, IA (www.kingsleyinn.com). Great location right on the river with beautiful views. A really nice restaurant/bar in the building and within a block of a great breakfast and lunch spot - The Ivy Bake Shoppe (www.ivybakeshoppe.com). A number of specialty shops and other restaurants in the area as well.
Thanks for the help. I will check them out. I really like Ft Madison area, so maybe that would be good.
