Hi everyone - we're just starting to think about a holiday in Oct/Nov this year (2012) and really like the idea of travelling around the Deep South.
We love the sound of wandering round New Orleans, Mississippi, Lafayette, Asheville, South Louisiana eating, bar hopping and meeting locals but where do we start?? Would we be best to fly to NO and drive in a big circle?? I'm assuming we wouldn't have any problem finding places to stay....
We really want to avoid the tourist trail if we can...
Any advice regarding location, where to eat, visit or stay would be fabulous. We want to plan but not PLAN if you know what I mean!!
Oh and if anyone can offer advice on RV hire that would be hugely useful too....we've only usually stayed under canvas!

This wouldn't be an area that I would want to RV at, especially coming from a different country.
I think you will spend more money in an RV than you would otherwise for sure.
Oh really? Should we hire a car and use motels then? Why not a motor home? X
Asheville is in NC I believe. LA is a great state. Stay in NOLA in the FQ and walk to all the attractions. It's a great city. If you go up through MS go N on 3 61 and visit historic Natchez, MS then stop by Vicksburg for a night and visit the National Military Park. Stop in Greenwood, MS for a night at the 4 * Alluvian Hotel and dine at Lusco's. Then head for Clarksdale home of the blues and on to Memphis, TN for more Blues and good BBQ.

The motorhome may cost you more than staying in motels and in my p opinion,is not the best choice if you plan on visiting cities like New Orleans. I would consider renting a motorhome if you were planning to stay mostly in our National or State Parks or perhaps if you were travelling with a large family.

Other posters will give you a better suggestions of places to visit. Late October and November is a good time to visit that area since it is the tail end of hurricane season.
It's also a nice time of year to visit Florida. Uncrowded and great weather (if there isn't a hurricane in the area) The Panhandle beaches of Florida are beautiful. We have enjoyed visiting Seaside and the Beaches of 30A in October.
