First of all - SD Airport is fairly compact - particularly when compared to Dallas, etc.

And Q: Are you arriving at the commuter terminal - or one of the two main terminals?

Now even though International Flights want you there two hours early (you have 1 hr 40 minutes right?) - even if you arrive at the commuter terminal - assuming you are not delayed - you should probably be able to catch the airport shuttle and make your flight (you could even hoof it if you had to) - assuming the security lines are not terribly long. The security lines normally move fairly well here, except at the very busy holdiay times.

And even if you arrive at Terminal 1 (Delta is in Terminal 2) - it's a fairly short walk over to Terminal 2.

Thank you very much. My flight from san jose is with southwest airline but i do not see the terminal on my itinerary. But from the link you sent it seems that Southwest uses terminal 1 not communal.

Well, if your Southwest flight is delayed significantly, Delta has no reason to wait for you or put you on another flight since they are not partners. You would be far safer to have booked the San Jose to San Diego with Delta. Or take an even earlier flight with Southwest to make sure you have plenty of time in case there's a delay with them.

From 10:40 to noon is 1:20 - not 1:40. And if your flight into SD i late you are totally screwed. I suggest you take an earlier flight into SD - to avoid the risk of having to buy another international ticket at the every expensive walk up rate.

Why would you chance it? If everything goes perfectly, you'll make it, but if anything at all goes wrong - flight delay, long security line - you won't.

It is always risky when booking a part of a lengthy trip separately. This happened to use a few years ago. We booked LAX to HNL. We booked a separate flight on a different airline arriving to LAX from BUF the night before. We got a call from the airline about 4 hours before the flight from BUF to LAX, informing us that our flight was delayed and we would miss our connection in Chicago. On top of that, it was the last departing flight out of Chicago to LAX until the next morning. WE could not make it to LAX in time for our Hawaii flight. When we called the airline that we were using to get to Hawaii, they could not guarantee us any seats until 3 days later. They did say we could go standby. We ended up canceling the entire trip.

I just relay this because, although it is probable everything will be okay, one screw up on that first flight can produce a domino effect of problems.

BTW,m when I flew to SAN from the Bay Area earlier this week, my original flight was delayed 3 times (for a total delay of 2+ hours), the next flight left on time (which is the one we got on, having paid full price for our ticket we were able to change), and the one after that was cancelled.

Even so - as others have noted - it might be cutting a bit close. Usually - don't think late Sunday morning is that busy here in SD - and don't know - but haven't heard of a lot of flights getting delayed from San Jose - but you could try for an earlier flight.

That way - you could have a Starbucks/whatever at the SD airport - while reading the Sunday paper - not worrying about making your overseas connection.

You are flying internationally (even though the first flight is to New York), cannot check your bags through from San Jose, and have to retrieve them and check them in at Delta. I would never EVER risk that at the front end of an international itinerary. It might be just fine but ANY little glitch and you are totally screwed. You'd have to buy a full/walk-up fare for the next flight out . . . which could cost thousands.

Luckily your flight is on Southwest so you can either change to an earlier flight (and the night before would be my choice) - or - cancel it and keep the WN (Southwest) credit for some other trip and book and earlier flight down w/ another airline - or - drive down the evening before.

JJ - I assume he's flying the same airline from SJC through to Europe. Seems like they will check his bags through. I know AA does.

mervin - you're leaving early enough out of SJC, so there should not be a problem. You will fly into the commuter air terminal.

Southwest comes into Terminal 1 - while Delta leaves from Terminal 2 (West side of that terminal). While it's not really that far walking - (5 minutes?) - if you do have to retrieve your luggage to check it through internationally with Delta - that would take some time. Best not to cut it too close, especially with going on to Paris.

Good choice. Old Town is very close to the airport and have some relatively inexpensive hotel options.

Think that is the wise choice - and there are also some inexpensive, plain jane type places to stay at nearby Pt. Loma.
