We are two adults in our mid-60s who enjoy moderate hiking, boating, and seeing nature. I am thinking of spending a day at the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center; this would be on the day we drive from the White Mountains area (not sure where we'll be staying - I have a separate post about that) to Portland, ME. It appears that it's a drive of just over 2 hours from the center to Portland, which we don't mind. If we end up staying far from the science center before we go there, we could spend the night before we go there in Holderness.
Is the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center worthwhile visiting?

YES! My entire family, from the parents to the 20 year old, all the way down to an 8 year old enjoyed themselves at Squam Lake Natural Science Center. It was lots of fun, you walk in a huge loop on a dirt trail which kinda feels like you're hiking, but along the way you get to stop at "stations" with animal exhibits and hands-on learning. My family all enjoyed it, and I think that you will to!
Message me if you have any further questions!
We went there a couple of weeks ago. We enjoyed the boat ride but didn't have time to see all of the stations. I think it would be a great place to bring children. For adults, I wouldn't call it a "can't miss," but it is worth a visit if one has time.
We haven't been in years so it's time to think about bringing the grandchildren. It's one of my favorite areas of NH. Make sure your route to Portland includes driving thru Center Sandwich and Tamworth even if it's a detour (but goes over to Rt 16). Twice we have seen black bears near the road in this area.
About the only way you are going to get a good look at the lake is to take a boat ride. There isn't any public beach on the lake.
