We are looking for help re accomodation in Key west. We are planning to stay there on Dec 20th and 21st, we are a family of 2 adults and 2 young children. I have had a look online and the same few hotels seem to be coming up on every site and all are very expensive. If you have any local advice it would be gratefully appreciated.

Without a stated budget, it's impossible to know what is "very expensive" to you.
Look at the Best Western Plus Hibiscus. The rooms are large; the location is great; the amenities are good; and the rate for the days you mention would be $190 per night--what I would call reasonable for KW in December.
We stayed at the Conch House a few years ago . . nice B&B. Walking distance to Truman Ave whick takes you thru the middle of Key West
