LA Althletic Club hotel and neighborhood?

Coming to LA in May for a conference and am booked at the LA Athletic Club. Was considering staying at JWMarriot LA Live as it's close to the convention center, but a little pricey. I did look at Google Street view and there didn't seem to be a lot going on in that area anyway. Am I mistaken? Question – wondering if the neighborhood around the Athletic Club will entertain me enough during off hours from the convention. ie; restaurants, shopping, people watching etc. Also, there is shuttle service provided by the conference to/from the convention centre, but I don't mind walking. I assume this would be OK?
