Rent a car for about $20/day and go anywhere you want including Hoover Dam. I have stayed in Henderson and other locations south of LV. I like the Fiesta in Henderson if the $249/week place is unacceptable.

It's not really the "south end of the strip", it's a couple of miles south of the casinos that are on the south end of the strip. I don't think I would stay down there without a car, though it might depend on the frequency and times that they run their shuttle, and where exactly the shuttle stops. To the Mirage area, it would probably be a 25-30 min shuttle ride during traffic times. Also, $249 a week sounds great but do they add one of those nasty $15 per day "resort fees"?

No there are no resort fees that I can see on there web site. There is always add ons in any hotel (surcharge.) So far most reviews have been very positive. I didn't see that on trip advisor thanks for the info Happytrails. We will be coming from the east coast so I must figure what the savings is on a package deal including hotel/air etc. We are not big gamblers at all, but would like to see shows and be near good restaurants. Thanks.

Grand View is definitely not near good restaurants. So figure into your budget the $8 each way shuttle to the strip and that you'll probably be using that shuttle twice a day or even 4 times a day. Just using the shuttle once per day, round trip, adds up to $32 per day.
On a budget consider a hotel like Orleans or Gold Coast that has free shuttle back and forth to the strip and is closer. Also there are great rates right on the strip for weeknights. The deals/hotels page on LasVegasAdvisor.com has links to many deals, someone mentioned $21 per night at the Rio (off strip) and $35 per night at Harrahs (mid strip). Rooms at the Flamingo have all been renovated and Flamingolv.com usually lists special rates. If your dates are flexible, rates vary widely in Las Vegas from week to week.

The GrandView is a place I don't know much about other than location. It's tough to say if it's a good deal for you. Are you traveling with kids and want to be away from the Strip? If not I'd say try the Flamingo. No resort fee, reasonable price and great location. For a great deal, change of pace and a lot of fun try the Golden Nugget downtown. Beautiful pool, and the rooms are as nice as the Strip. The Smith Center for the Performing Arts just opened Downtown and has an amazing schedule with Broadway Shows and other entertaiment. The Mob Museum is also new downtown (excellent place to visit) and there are several excellent places to dine, Vic & Anthony's Steakhouse is one of the best in the country, Second Street Grill at the Fremont has the best Ahi Tuna in town, and several other little gems that are favorites of locals. If you've got kids the Lied Childrens Science Museum is close. I'm a fan of lasvegasbylocals.com. Check for packages and things to do. Also if you do stay at the Grandview, the Steakhouse at South Point is very good and very inexpensive. Try Town Square (no casinos there) for one stop that has loads of restaurants, shops, movie etc. that's pretty close to the Grandview.

Well you know Mike61 I am thinking perhaps the Golden Nuggut downtown might work. I remember downtowm being funky cheaper. No we are 2 adults (girls week away.) More like "seniors." LOL. I just want clean and convenient to transportation. Resort fee's in most hotels now are $25 a day!! Joesource implied $15--NOT try $25. We would also like day trips. I remember doing a river raft ride when my husband and I went years ago. It was a blast and the highlight of my trip!! Thanks for the great suggestions. I keep looking at package deals/hotel/air together. I will try seperate sites.

I can't speak to the quality of the rooms, but it is less than 2 blocks walk to get on the "Deuce" to go south on the Strip.
The "Deuce" is less than $10 for a 24 hour pass.
To save more money eat at the Golden Nugget buffet paying before 3 PM.

The Grandview is within easy walking distance to the South Point which has array of good dining options. The prime rib in the coffee shop has listed as a top 10 value by the Las Vegas Advisor for several months. A step up is the Prime Rib Loft has excellent pricing as does Don Vito's (Italian). Other dining options include a buffet, oyster bar, steakhouse, deli, burgers and Mexican. For entertainment, there are bowling lanes, movies, a lounge and showroom with both nightly live entertainment and weekend headliners. Gambling is far superior to anything you will find on the Strip.

My niece loves her timeshare at the Grandview and usually opts to rent a car because she likes to visit M Resort which further south on Las Vegas Blvd.

Bookmark for a a trip in Jan 2013 and stay at South Point.

The Southpoint Casino - next door - has good dining options plus a big movie complex.

It's all up to you. You should have a nice condo type unit at the Grandview - and you could rent a car with the savings - or stay in a smaller room - but center strip - not downtown - which is old and tacky.

We were looking at a big apartment building next to the SouthPoint Casino (to purchase) - and dined at the Southpoint several times. They have a very good coffee shop - with specials - 11 PM to 7 AM, a fairly decent/inexpensive buffet and several more formal dining options, steakhouse, etc. Also - a couple miles down the strip from there - is a new luxury casino - M - which is also fun.
