A group of us who post on another message board are planning to meet up in DC in a couple of months. We will need about a dozen rooms and are looking for a hotel/inn/B&B that is close to public transportation, in walking distance of restaurants, and is under $175 a night.A nice lobby or other public space would be a plus. Does such a place exisit?
I haven't been to DC in decades, so I don't even know the neighborhoods. I assume that places close in are quite expensive and that further out are less so but is there a happy medium?
Recommendations of areas or specific hotels/inns/B&Bs would be greatly appreciated.
Looking for a good location for a DC small group meet up

You'll have no problem finding 12 rooms in a central hotel for under $175 that meets all your needs - I do suggest reserving a place ASAP for a group your size, however.
Contact the hotels directly to inquire about group rates (which a dozen rooms qualifies for).
Here are a few to contact (in order of my top choices listed first, though all are good options):
Courtyard Washington Convention Center
Grand Hyatt Washington
Fairfield Inn & Suites Washington, DC/Downtown
Hampton Inn Washington-Downtown-Convention Center
Crowne Plaza Hamilton
DC doesn't have hardly any B&Bs, and they wouldn't handle groups that large, anyway. There aren't hardly any "inns", either, in big cities, unless you consider Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn, etc. The is one inn I know of, which is lovely and central, but everyone in your group would have to be on board with the idea of no elevators and no TV. I wouldn't if it were me. And their rooms are more like $200, but they do have enough rooms, in theory, if you all booked together and got them at the right time. that is http://www.tabardinn.com/
I would say you are right in that places in the burbs are cheaper, like Arlington, Ballston, etc. It really depends on your dates, I don't think there is much around for what you want to spend at some peak time periods in DC downtown, but some of the above chains are possible (eg, Crowne Plaza), especially if they do allow you to book for group rates (good luck on organizing that). I don't like the area around the convention center myself, I'd prefer Dupont Circle or maybe Penn Qtr or Metro Center area (or McPherson Square).
YOu don't say exactly when you are coming, but if you intend to come exactly at the Cherry BLossom Festival time, there will be big crowds and no cheap rooms (culminates April 13th).
The hotel we stayed at last summer is not as central as you want, but they cater to people going to conventions, and have a smaller convention room of their own that seats about 100-200 ish: Savoy Suites. I am guessing that you would probably pay $150-$200/night for this hotel, but without your dates I don't know for sure.
There is a shuttle to both Georgetown and to the Woodland Park Metro stop, and it was very reliable and exactly as promised. People we met on the shuttle were often going to conferences elsewhere. Some were also tourists. There was also small conference onsite when we arrived. There is also a hotel restaurant.
Savoy Suites also has a sister property called the Carlyle Suites that is much closer to the action (right near Dupont Circle) and they also have meeting facilities if you want them. Have not been there, though.
