heading to the villa next month with our 2 young-adult daughters. Timing of tours at the villa would put us arriving there around 1pm, so wanted to stop first somewhere for lunch.
The menu at the Villa cafe didn't interest me, although I am happy with something fairly casual- a really good sandwich, wrap, panini etc- or maybe a fish restaurant/cafe. My husband and I happened on Paradise Cove last year, and thought it fun, but I don't want to overshoot the Villa by that much. (We're coming up from Orange County, so something in even Santa Monica would work, although I was picturing Malibu...) thanks!
lunch near Getty Villa?

If the Reel Inn is still open you might check it out. It was one of my favorite stops in Malibu.
About three miles up Highway 1 are Moonshadows (where Mel Gibson lost it) and Dukes--both with ocean views.

We like this little Irish pub place. Menu is extensive and affordable. It is on a cute little street in Santa Monica, close to the ocean, and it has metered parking in back:

There are other little cafes and shop in this neighborhood, too.
Enjoy the Villa! One of my favorite places to visit.
PS I don't think you want to overshoot the Villa, but if you do, the Charthouse Malibu is one of our favorites, also.
Is the Malibu Charthouse open for lunch, some of them are dinner only.
I agree with HTTY, both Duke's is good and ate at Moonshadows once when Duke's was closed.
The veranda at the Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica is one of my favorite places for lunch! (In fact, it is my profile pic here if you click on my name) Gorgeous ocean view from the lovely, civilized setting. Very reasonable prices!! However, if you have to be at the Villa at 1:00 PM, you are talking about having lunch ~11:30? Not sure if all places serve that early...
The Charthouse Malibu used to do lunch. I haven't checked lately. Good question.
But I don't think the OP wants to drive past the Villa. The Georgian Hotel is a great idea.
thanks for the suggestions. Funny, both Amelia's and the Irish Pub are near a place we've been before- Urth Cafe. We liked it, but I don't like the jockeying for a table once you've ordered, never being sure if there will be a place to sit available!
Will check out the places mentioned; Duke's sure looks convenient. Thank you!
Keep in mind that, although entry tickets to the Getty Villa are free, you have to make TIMED reservations. The options are only on the hour and on the half hour. So, if you need to be at a particular place to start a tour at 1:00, you'll want ticket reservations for 12:30.
AND, you can only turn into the Getty entrance from the northbound lane of Pacific Coast Highway. So, if you eat anywhere north of the Getty, after lunch you'd have to drive past the Getty and turn around somewhere so that you're heading north again.
There is a cafe on the grounds that opens at 11:00. On Thursdays and Saturdays, tea is served at 1:00.
