We are looking for a resort near Appalachian Mountains and/or lake in either PA or WV to stay for a week in July. We'd like to keep it about a 6 hour drive from Toledo OH if possible. We've checked out Stonewall in WV but it's not quite what we're looking for. We don't want a B&B, but rather more high end accommodations with shopping and nice restaurants nearby. It's just the two of us, so nothing needed for children or sports. We enjoy sightseeing and would like to enjoy the solitude of a beautiful quiet vacation. Anyone have any ideas?

Try Ligoneir, PA (spelling?).
Check out the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort ( http://www.nemacolin.com/ ), which sits in the southwest corner of Pennsylvania on the old National Road near Fort Necessity National Battlefield ( http://www.nps.gov/fone/index.htm )and Ohiopyle State Park ( http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/ohiopyle/index.htm ). Frank Lloyd Wright's amazing Fallingwater home is also nearby ( http://www.fallingwater.org/ ).
The Greenbriar is one of the most famous luxury resorts in that part of the country. So I think you have to include it on your list, but it's very close to the Virginia border and might be further from Columbus. I don't know the exact distance. It's very scenic there, but if you want to see Falling Water, then Nemacolin is a better choice.
Sorry ... I see it's Toledo, not Columbus. It's almost 400 miles to the Greenbriar from there, so that's more like 7 to 8 hours. I think that's too far. I'd choose something in Pennsylvania instead unless you don't mind the extra drive.
It may be difficult to find a luxury mountain location in PA/WV with nearby shopping/restaurants. Pick a resort and enjoy the amenities on-site, but don't expect much beyond great scenery in the area surrounding the property.
Nemacolin Woodlands has a variety of shopping and dining option on site.
Besides golf, there's hiking, rafting, biking, and sights all near Nemacolin. (Farmington, PA, about 1.5 hr from Pittsburgh)
