As you traverse Michigan's UP, detour a bit to Pictured Rocks Nat. Lakeshore on Lake Superior. Also in Wisconsin, the Door Peninsula has some very scenice spots.
BTW, the island uses the French spelling-Mackinac. The city on the mainland uses the English spelling-Mackinaw, but they're both pronounced the same.
I would visit Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Point with the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Grand Marais and Pictured Rocks, all in the eastern Upper Penninsula and taking about a day and a half. You ight also see the Soo Locks in Sault Ste Marie, depending on your interests.
