Wife and I are now going to spend 5 days in Nashville in early October. I am wondering now if 5 days in Nashville is too much or should we spend a day or two in Memphis or somewhere else in Tennesee. We are in our mid 50's so late night clubbing is not a priority!

I think 5 days in Nashville is probably to many. I would head to Memphis for a couple of days.

What state are you traveling from? If its West of Mississippi River then I would do 2 days in Memphis and 3 in Nashville.
Now if your coming from the East then I would do Nashville a couple of days and maybe head over to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg/Smoky Mountain area for 3 days.
I live close to Memphis and I think there is more to do and see here. I g to Nashville often and love the city but feel like 5 days there is to long.
Enjoy your trip and just have fun
Smoky's would have good fall foliage, but expect crowds. Memphis is great for a couple of days too.
What all do you plan on doing in Nashville?
In April, we spent 3 days in Nashville and 2 in Memphis.
We probably could have spent an additional day in Nashville but felt 2 days was enough in Memphis.
Lots of fun and good food in both places.
I agree with the above. Split between Nashville and Memphis but let me also recommend the Natchez Trace Parkway. Beautiful drive: http://www.nps.gov/natr/index.htm
