Husband, 13yr daughter & myself headed east end of July for 1 week. Time to head back west. Home is 1300 miles from Boston. Depending on how late we leave Boston on Friday will determine how many hours we will drive.
How heavy is traffic on Friday night on I-84? Is this the best route? Would Danbury, CT (158 miles) be a place to grab hotel? Wished we could get as far as Scranton, PA but that is 5 hours (291 miles) from Boston. Is there any other town between Danbury and Scranton that has good hotel choices?
On Saturday we will drive 12-14 hours - not sure where that will put us. Depends on road construction in PA, OH, IN, & IL. then final push on Sunday. Anyone have tips on this final stretch?

Middlebury vt quickie
I went to Danburry once as part of my official tour. Don't worry about the traffic as it's not much in this road. Travelling by road is a very good decision. Danburry CT is a good business point, so you will find a good number of affordable hotels there. Danbury Plaza hotel is a good one as it's having stylish accommodations and refreshing amenities. Another one is Hilton garden Inn. Hope this information would be helpful for you.
Do these hotels offer free breakfast?
I strongly disagree with Pamela - who has been to Danbury once. I travel Rte 84 multiple times/year and unless I travel at very off-peak hours, it is not a fun road. There has been ongoing construction for literally decades - much is finally done (probably time to start redoing that). It would be a rare trip where you could make Scranton in 5 hours. The reason for traffic on a Friday is Bostonians heading west to Berkshires, and other summer destinations.
Based on your other posts, if you leave Boston at 6 PM or later, traffic might not be terrible. Danbury/Carmel/Newburgh (NY) area has multiple chain-type hotels along that route. I would just do a search and pick a chain you are comfortable with.
Take special care to avoid speed traps on Rte 84, especially as you cross into CT - they are always there and will be just waiting for you.
How long to get to Scranton?
Do you think Danbury/carmel/Newburgh hotels would fill up on Friday night. Just wonderingi if we didn't have a reservation and drove as far as we could would hotels be full. In Iowa during summer on I-80 most hotels can fill by 9:00pm
