What city?
I just pulled up Hertz for one day on Saturday, July 28, and there was no problem at all renting for one day.
They're the highest rated car rental company and reasonable prices. I looked at a Corolla for $32 plus taxes and airport fees. It's cheaper if you rent outside the aiport.
Book online. Remember, your credit card covers CDW and the stuff. If in doubt, call the CC company.
If you are in New York City or someplace like Cape Cod, finding a one day rental could be difficult. Finding one anywhere else, especially if you are willing to go to the airport for pickup, it should not be.
I can't imagine it would be a problem anywhere, but especially not for the reason given. I am totally amazed at the rate Rastaguy quoted. I think it will be in the neighborhood of a hundred dollars!!
I guess a problem could be the agency being closed on Saturday.
And why not rent the night before?
We live in St. Louis. At our friendly neighborhood Enterprise office you can pick a car up Sat AM and return it Mon AM, and get a I think $19.99/day weekend special with < 100 miles/day.
With the hassle of going to airport where the car rental offices stay open all day everyday, you could rent for a day. By the hour, no.
Every car rental agency rents for a day, but not all will allow you to drop off after 6pm because they aren't open, particularly if you are renting away from an airport. But that should pose absolutely no problems for you.
But as everyone here is asking: Where is this? If it's Kansas City or St. Louis airport, then no problem. If it's Rolla, well, perhaps there's going to be a problem.
Enterprise is one choice. But look for ZIP cars. You tell them where you are, the car is parked and you get the keys and bring it back to same location. New and interesting business model.

ZIP car is a particularly bad idea for the casual renter who already owns a car. First, it requires a monthly membership fee. Second, its hourly rates are expensive and are priced for someone to borrow a car for 2 or 3 hours, not a whole day. If Zipcar operated in Missouri, which is does not except at UMKC (an unlikely spot for the OP to be wanting to rent a car), it would cost as much to rent a car for a day as it does in Midtown Manhattan. THe poster can get a Priceline or Hotwire rental for a quarter of that in all likelihood.
