Both are in good locations, but I'd choose the Affinia Shelburne. There are many more nearby dining spots and cheaper places to grab breakfast, and the proximity to Grand Central makes it easy to get around the city.
The Waldorf Towers are elegant, anitiques, tasteful decor. Can't believe you get a room there for $$ and would grab it if that deal is still available.
The Waldorf Towers rooms aren't fixed, so the number of floors devoted to the "towers" can change from day to day and week to week. Not all rooms there are created equal, but they are usually not cheap. And the Waldorf is a huge hotel with sometimes impersonal service and a lot of general inconsistency. Some of it is dated.
The reason that I like the Shelburne is that it's in a more residential area and has more options at night and for breakfast nearby. And also because the hotel has been recently and completely renovated.
We've had incredible and flawless service tnere in the past. Dining options can be a problem as DS notes.
Thank you both for the information. previously stayed at the Waldorf with no complaints, but will try the Shelburne for a new adventure.
