While in Pinehurst be sure to go to Green Gate Olive Oils for a real treat. You can taste probably 60 or more different olive oils and vinegars. Delicious.
You are about 2 hours from Charlotte and 3.5 from Asheville. We have stellar museums in Charlotte, both history and art. There is a very nice 18th century rural plantation just north of Charlotte--Latta Place. Great restaurants--and more. We have a nice farmers' market
There are lots of threads about Asheville and there is a large regional farmers' market there.
You might enjoy going to Seagrove nearer Pinehurst if you like pottery, and there is a nice pottery museum there also. But there are probably60 potters in the area, all doing different styles/types of pottery.
You may want to consider a visit to Wilmington and the Wrightsville Beach area. That is approximately 2 1/2 hours from Pinehurst. There is a lot to do and see around downtown Wilmington (restaurants, shops, theater). The beaches of Wrightsville are beautiful. You will definitely love exploring Airlie Gardens and all of their 67 acres of historical gardens. Here is their website:

Enjoy!
