Spent a week in New Orleans with great food and lots of sun.
Quick impressions:
Johnny's Po-Boys, good po-boys and muffuletas, but the place is dirty, get the food and take it for a picnic.
Brennan's had al la carte breakfast. Taso Ham omlette was tasty, but on the greasy side. The andoullie sausage omlette was better. Of course the Bananas Foster was great!
Gumbo Shop on St. Peter St. had the best gumbo of the city. Had the chicken and andoullie while DW had the seafood and okra gumbo. A friend had the shrimp creole. All was outstanding.
Best breakfast was at the Camellia Grill, 540 Chartres Street
The Bourbon House on Bourbon St. was great for fresh oysters, but the best part was a Bourbon Ice Milk....sort of a vanilla milk shake with bourbon added!
Worst meal was at Royal House on Royal Street. Oysters Rockefeller so overdone you couldn't tell there was an oyster in there.
Stayed at the Penthouse at Jax Brewery on Decauter....great place. 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, loads of outdoor space, outdoor pool. Overlooks the Mississippi and the Natchez riverboat.
Five minutes to the streetcar stop..

Good brief report -- thanks.
Agreed, Johnny's does great po-boys, but the place is indeed a pit. Take-away is a good choice unless you're willing to forgo anything falling off your plate onto the table. Two other worthy muffuletta choices if you return are Central Grocery (cold version) and Napoleon House (hot version) -- both are excellent.
I enjoyed eating breakfast at Brennan's (just resign oneself to a very expensive experience if attempted) and found doing a prix fixe was a comparative money-saver. Reports are mixed on this place from various online sources, but it sounds like your experience was generally good, as was mine.
The place I eat at at home every Saturday and Sunday is probably as dirty as Johnny's and I haven't died yet (nor did I do take-out from Johnny's - I choose to ignore a little grime!)
