HELP!!! I'm trying to plan a road trip from Texas to Florida. The trip is a return from seeing family in the Houston area and I'm looking for ideas of things to do on the way back to the Pensacola area. I've got about a week and a half and will be taking my two dogs along. I'll be leaving Texas around the 8th of July.
I'm interested in scenic drives, camping and day hikes (with the dogs in mind), good food in out of the way places, and generally anything else one can do without leaving dogs in the car too long.

We enjoyed a one night stay in DeFuniak Springs. Nice lake, nice Hotel that has a very good restaurant.
With 10 days for the trip, I would take 59 from Houston to Lufkin, 103 East into Louisana and 6 to Natchitoches ( pronounced "Nakidish" ) and spend one nite there.

Then south on LA 1 to Nachez

Then wander about towards Baton ROuge and take LA 1 South thru the plantations and sneak into New Orleans fomr the Guld side.

You can spend as long in New Orleans as you can stand then head home to Pensecola
I hear Avery Island - where they make Tabasco sauce - is a nice detour.

I would spend some time in Vicksburg, Re: http://www.nps.gov/vick/index.htm Natchez and the Natchez Trace Parkway, re: http://www.nps.gov/natr/index.htm and then on to New Orleans for a few days.
