Saluda/Hendersonville/Asheville NC - To Do w/Kids

Our family of five, including children ages 6-10, will be staying in Saluda, NC all of next week. Looking for recommendations on things to do/see. Good hikes for kids, sites to see, places to visit, picnic locations, interesting activities for children, etc. I'd like to include apple picking and any other fall adventures available. Is there gem mining?

We rented a nice cabin for fall break to enjoy the foliage and to just get away from our busy daily routine.
