I and my 2 daughters, 24 and 14, will be visiting the Keys in June this year and plan to do some snorkel trips.
We are spending 4 nights on Islamorada(Casa Morada) and 3 nights on Key West)Tropical Inn). We plan on one snorkel excursion to the patch reefs off Islamorada and were wondering if we should drive to Bahia Honda or Big Pine Key to do an excursion to Looe Reef.
Does anyone have any experience with Looe? Is it worth it to make a separate excursion and, if so, would it be easier to do from Islamorada or KW?
Finally, is there any decent snorkeling to be had from the shoreline on any of the Keys?
Thanks, everyone, for your input!!

We very much enjoyed snorkeling in John PenneKamp park. Not sure what the shore snorkeling is from there - but a guided tour was not that expensive. http://www.pennekamppark.com/
Here is one page that says there is some good shore snorkeling there. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/florida-diving/294484-snorkeling-off-beach-john-pennekamp.html
Just noticed this wen reading further down that page:
"If your going south then Bahia Honda is great , loads of fish , shallow ideal for your ages.
If your in Key west Fort Zachary is even better. They have placed man made rock piles 20 yards of the coast , loads to see all around. Depth is about 15 foot on the backside and current can be strong so its a bit harder than Bahia Honda."
Thanks Tomsd...the scuba link was really informative.
