My husband and I visit Estes two or three times a year and our experience has been that they do not get as much snow as ski areas do. That would not be my first choice as a snowy destination in Colorado. However, in Rocky Mountain National Park, you can easily drive to an area in the higher elevations like Bear Lake where they are much more likely to have snow. Yes, the winds can be fierce as well, but it's another aspect of the weather that you can't predict, and you're just as likely to get sunny and relatively warm weather there.

The ski areas such as Summit County will be more likely to have snow, and they have some wonderful cabins but Christmas time is very expensive. Maybe you'd have some luck looking in Dillon or Frisco as opposed to right on the slopes if you're not skiing. There's also a lot more to do in this area than in Estes like sledding that the boys might enjoy. Just make sure they're dressed well, and you won't be able to get them to come back inside!

Snow would not be dependable for snow at anytime. It is the east side of the divide which tends to be dry which is why most of the ski areas are located on the western side of the divide. A lon reason for that. Grand lake would be better but you need to be deeper in the mountains for more dependable snow.

We are a bit biased, but Estes Park in the winter is our favorite mountain destination. It is true that many of the ski resorts get more snow than in Estes, however by the holidays there is typically a blanket of snow in the higher elevations, in Rocky Mountain National Park and/or Roosevelt national Forest. There is also sledding in the park and easy snowshoeing trails that even small children can manage (rentals are very cheap and can be found at multiple locations in town).

At the lower elevations (in the village) it is typically warmer and non-snow outdoor activities can be done most of the winter (hiking, riverwalk & lake trail, horseback riding, biking, ice skating, etc.).

Anyone that has been to Estes knows that the wind can be a factor, however much depends on where you are in the valley. Much of the Park is shielded from the winds and they are very dependent on the weather patterns. I would suggest inquiring with your property as well - they should have a good idea of the possible wind in and around the cabin, should they be active during your stay.

I know I am starting to sound like a commercial, but the truth is that our winter guests love Estes and truly enjoy the relaxing mountain getaway feel, affordability, and comfortable surroundings. Thanks Brooke but I just booked a house in Breckenridge. I've been to Estes Park before and agree, it is just lovely. However, we really wanted snow to be just outside and at this point, I am just playing the odds. We do plan to come for a day trip on this visit though!
