Me, my husband, and my one year will be going to Myrtle Beach for a week. We will be traveling from Southern Maryland to Myrtle Beach on I-95 (about 8 hours).
Next Friday on the way home we would like to stop for the night somewhere. We want to drive about half way which would put us in North Carolina around Roanke Rapids area. We are willing to drive a little bit out of the way but not hours. So anyway, any suggestions on where to stop? We like to try and stop somewhere "interesting" and not just some hotel right off I-95. We were thinking of something scenic and looking at the Lake Gaston area. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Lake Gaston is great. I've never stayed at a hotel anywhere out there though.
Look at Edenton, NC, or New Bern, NC. Neither are right on the highway but they are not too far off and both are really neat.
My sister and I visited Edenton years ago (we are Californians). We found it attractive and interesting, particularly historically. The women of Edenton had an Edenton Tea Party in solidarity with Boston in the 18th century. Harriet Jacobs, who wrote Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, lived there in hiding for years in the 19th c.

We also visited Somerset, a plantation nearby. Very moving.

*My sister and I are both interested in early American history and literature. YMMV. But it is a strikingly pretty little town.
