In mid-September we will be traveling through Montana and North Dakota. Haven't been to either state before and just wondering when driving across Montana which highway or Interstate would be best for seeing some beautiful scenery; and also what can I expect in North Dakota? We thought we'd drive across ND and then drop down to Iowa. Would sure appreciate any input.

I've only driven on I-95 from Billings to the N. Dakota border. It's mostly rolling plans, but nice. Just east of Billings is Pompey's Pillars National Monument http://www.pompeyspillar.org/about.html
In North Dakota I highly recommend Theodore Roosevelt National Park, both the north and south sections. We had worked our way down from northern North Dakota and had been to the International Peace Gardens on the N. Dakota - Manitobia border. Don't know if you want to go that far north but we really liked it up there.
Utahtea
I think that utahtea meant I-94...odd numbered freeways run north and south. We have traveled from the Seattle area to the midwest several times, and IMHO I-94 is a nicer ride than I-90 or (ugh) I-80.
I agree with Utahtea about the TRNPs. We really enjoyed the northern section.
It was there where we had to stop while a buffalo meandered across the road in front of us.

one word of caution in your travels. Having grown up in that neck of the woods, be prepared for winter driving conditions, even though it is still September. I have seen it snow every month when I lived out there.
Thank you for the heads up about possible snow in September. If it does snow at that time of year is it light or heavy or just a "take your chances?" We're from California and neither one of us has much experience driving in any type of snow. Call us overly cautious - last year we were going to do this trip in April (but coming back from a trip) heard snow was forcast and we went back down to I-40 to stay out of it and did fine until we got to Flagstaff, AZ. Woke up to find everything covered in snow. Thankfully, by the time we got on the road it had stopped snowing, already melting and by the time we got to Williams all the snow was gone. By now you are probably laughing yourself silly at us, but it's just the way we are LOL!!
