MSC Cruises
Style: Premium

Sleek lines and plenty of open deck space are hallmarks of MSC ship design.

Traditional midnight buffets are supplemented by late-night snacks offered throughout the lounges by strolling waiters.

MSC has adapted their Italian style and menus for North Americans, but not to the extent of becoming fully Americanized.

With several seasons of Caribbean sailing beneath their hulls, MSC Cruises is poised to break out of newcomer status in the area. More widely known as one of the world's largest cargo shipping companies, MSC has operated cruises with an eclectic fleet since the late 1980s. Since introducing two graceful, medium-size ships in 2003 and 2004, MSC's expansion plans include operating a larger new ship (the MSC Musica) in the Caribbean for 2006.

Choose If ...

You appreciate authentic Italian cooking. This is the real thing, not an Olive Garden clone.

You want your ship to look like a ship. MSC's vessels are very nautical in appearance.

You want the Continental flair of a premium cruise at a fair price.

Don't Choose If ...

Announcements in more than one language get on your nerves.

You aren't able to accept things that are not always done the American way.

Myriad dining choices and casual attire are imperatives. MSC cruises have assigned seating and observe a dress code.

The answers to these and a thousand other cruise-related questions can be found in Fodor's new guide to Caribbean cruises.

MSC Cruises has catered almost exclusively to Europeans since the company's founding, and the changes necessary to conform to the style and habits favored by North Americans seemingly came as a surprise to them when they entered the Caribbean market. For example, Europeans prefer to go "out" for coffee after dinner; Americans want to be served coffee with their dessert. Unfortunately, this culture clash can cause misunderstandings and some contentiousness. Little things like too-small water glasses and no iced tea can make Americans cranky. To eliminate these issues and broaden their appeal, MSC has enlisted the services of top cruise-industry veterans; most important, though, staff members on board really listen to passengers and take their comments to heart.
