Launched in 1993 by British entrepreneur Gerry Herrod as an adventure-oriented cruise line, Orient Lines was acquired by Norwegian Cruise Line in 1998. Despite being owned by a mainstream cruise line, Orient Lines has operated as a distinct brand, entirely focused on destinations.
Since Orient Lines' inception, Marco Polo has been the flagship. From 2000 to 2003, a second ship (Crown Odyssey) joined her, but the venerable Marco Polo is once again the sole vessel in the Orient Lines fleet. Known for creative itineraries to far-flung ports of call, the line offers good value to passengers who have more interest in discovering the world than in the latest on board trends.
Food
Traditional five-course meals in the main dining room are often spiced up with dishes inspired by the local specialties of the region where you are traveling. Lighter fare and vegetarian selections are featured on all menus. Requests for special diets can be satisfied with advance notice. An extensive wine list is a welcome accompaniment to well-prepared and nicely presented dishes.
Fitness & Recreation
A smallish gym is equipped with exercise equipment, and exercise classes are on the fitness roster. Jogging and walking are popular pursuits. The spa offers a typical menu of massages, facials, and treatments with a Far Eastern focus. In addition, there are separate saunas for men and women.
Your Shipmates
Passengers are generally sophisticated travelers in their mid-60s and upwards. Many are well-heeled American retirees. In some regions of the world -- particularly in the South Pacific -- there may be quite a number of Australians and New Zealanders on board; residents of Great Britain and South Africa also find the itineraries and fares attractive.
Dress Code
Daytime attire is appropriately casual; evening wear falls into three categories: formal, informal, and smart casual. A list of any special clothing necessary for particular itineraries, such as Antarctica, is provided in advance.
Service
The Filipino staff provides gracious and attentive service with an emphasis on attention to detail.
Tipping
By way of guideline, Orient Lines suggests tipping $9 per passenger, per day to be divided between the cabin steward and dining room servers. A service charge of 15% is added to all bar checks as well as to beauty salon and spa charges.
