NYC Visit Sept - Advice on Visiting Harlem Gospel Singing

My wife and I will be coming from Scotland to visit NYC for two short trips of 3 and 4 days separated by a cruise, As part of our visit we would love to hear a real gospel choir.

We had heard that there are some churches in Harlem that might allow us to visit but have no idea if this is realistic or even practical.

I would be grateful for any advice regarding location and required dress. Any additional information/comments would be very welcome.

If you want a good day in Harlem,
try to have a day with an applegreeter.
Site : bigappalegreeter.com.
Some are "specialised" in Harlem and particulary Gertrude Rouzot.
You'll begin with a real godspel church
out of the turist way(specially out of
buses...), then a walking tour of some
particular sites(hamilton grange, morris
jummel mansion,...) and you'll finish the day at Parlor entertainment, where
Marjorie is hostess of a jazz/jam session every sunday from 4 to 6'30.
You'll have the entire spirit of harlem...
Take appointment in advance since Gertrude is often requested for harlem(they are only 2 or 3 greeters who
know harlem out of 125th. street).
N.B. ; parlorentertainment.com is the site of Marjorie...
Erik.

If you get the chance, go to the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Their choir is world-famous, and for all the right reasons.

They not only sing wonderfully, but they sing straight from their hearts, and all of their music is memorized and performed with live accompaniment.

Most of their songs are written and/or arranged by people from their church.

The story of the church's beginnings and growth is also amazing - you can look for books by Jim and/or Carol Cymbala to learn the story behind the church.

www.brooklyntabernacle.org is their website.

I'm a church choir director and can promise you an experience you'll never forget if you visit Brooklyn Tab!
