Cell Phones in Hawaii

i guess I could call Nextel to see if my phone will work on the islands, but I thought I'd throw this out to you guys to get a quicker response. Which cells do work on the island, as I'm sure mine's not one of them?????//

Pam, this really isn't an answer but my grandson moved from Portland OR to Oahu about 4 months ago. He has the same cell phone and # he did in Oregon.
Probably best to call Nextel. Do not know what cell ph. co. my grandson has.
Have a great trip!

I used Nextel on Oahu and Kauai and had good service in both places.

Hawai`i is part of the United States and any phone that will work on a US carrier will work fine here. We have the same carriers and networks as anywhere else in the U.S. Of course, as anywhere else on the planet there will be places where your signal is weak or non-existant, like in the mountains or inside my office.

Thanks everyone!!!! My hubbie and I both have Nextel cell phones, so I'm excited--we can call each other if one is delayed somewhere (although we're seldom apart). And it's great for an emergency--hopefully there'll be none. Nineteen days till paradise for a nineteen day vacation...Pam

here_today_gone2Maui, I really dont think Pam was trying to imply that Hawaii was a foreign country without amenities available on the continent. What she was asking relates to the problem I ran into in Alaska last summer. My Verizon phone DID work, but to the tune of a $5 connection fee and $5 per minute thereafter. I think she wanted to be an informed user before she got on the plane which is what I wanted and could not learn even from Verizon who gave me inacurate information. Going to the locals is sometimes the best way.

My daughter is in Hawaii now and with her nation wide plan she has been able to call home and tell us all about things she is doing without roaming or long distance fees.

Thanks Pollyvw..you hit the nail on the head, because our cell phones didn't work at all in Alaska. And yes, the locals do have much better answers to many questions. We have free nationwide calling, also, so I think our cell phone calls will be free..
