Cell phones work in Hawaii?
Should I even bother bringing my Verizon cell phone with me? I will be staying on Kauai. I have brought it before on vacation to other places with no luck.

The cheapest thing to do is buy a Hawaii compatible phone some place like ebay. Make sure it's unlocked. You can buy a Hawaiian SIM card for about 10 Hawaiian bucks in the main train station - right next to the change bureau.

Ipod Robbie- you are wrong. It costs 10 hawaiian shakas and they will give you a coconut with string that can be connected to any palm tree. You have to have a personal connection to get on the coconut wireless network.
On Kauai, you can rent a courier rooster....

Spokenman, could you elaborate on the roaming charges. We have Verizon nationwide roaming and didn't have a problem. Does it not apply to the analog mode? Also, we have unlimited incoming calls on our Nextel phone and had our home phone number call forwarded to the Nextel phone. It was a problem however if we forgot to turn it off at night. (time difference)

Unfortunately, you need a Ph.D. in applied economics to fully understand a cell company's billing plans. As I understand it, if you are out of your local coverage area, in an analog roam area, roaming charges apply, which is what happend to us on the BI. We pretty much thought that nation-wide means nation-wide, but that isn't the case. We were staying at the Kona by the Sea, and it was Analog roam. A mile or so closer to Kailua, it was Digital so no charge. Most of Maui is Digital.
All I really know is if you have a teenaged daughter with a boyfriend on the mainland, it just might get expensive.
Even with the plan I use at work, there are lots of off the beaten track places (lots of backroad Montana for example) where you are in analog roam, we just do not use the phone unless it is absolutely necessary. See your Verizon dealer and ask very pointed questions. But, if the phone shows Analog roam, assume you are going to pay charges, unless Verizon (or any of the other companies) tell you specificly otherwise.

You'll need to check with Verizon about your specific plan. Our plans (one prepay and the other monthly) with Verizon have no extra charges for analog roaming. And they worked great on the main areas of Kauai. But it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't work at the more out of the way places.
