Amboseli or Samburu?

I can pick one for my trip end of December early Jan...which would you pick and why? Different travel agents recommend different parks. Would love your opinions!

For the best answer, include your whole itinerary so we can see how it fits with everything else.

Either would be good.

Hi shothyme77

1. maybe have a glance at this thread
http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...mburu+Amboseli

2. read reports from LyndaS's
NEW EAST AFRICA Trip Report Index
http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessa...p;tid=34860283

3. my personal view, if you must decide either, = Samburu

a. The special fauna, different from anything you shall see from Mara & amboseli down south to the Cape.
The unique & rare Grevy Zebra, Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe...
plus the Somali Ostrich, Vulturine Guineafowl etc'
b. The "African" Savanna landscape with the umbrerlla-like Acacias - much like the 'classical' image of Africa
(though you may find in Ambvoseli some "pieces" of Acacia forest as well, most of the terrain is flat swamps & seasonal lake-bed)
c. birdlife
(Though amboseli will be strong on the water-birds)
d. this is my strictly personal:
the Commiphora woodland virtually alters my brain waves, but it took me years to "achieve" this "enlightment"
- erase this paragraph, probably nobody understands what the hell i'm talkin' about...

years ago (up to the 80s), Amboseli used to be the best place to see rhinos cheetahs & maybe even lions.
things have changed, partly because of natural processes - Kilimanjaro water seepage, water table levels etc'

aby

PS why not do both - then tell us what do you think ??

Let's be objective for a moment& define Amboseli's advantages
(Do not forget - i recommend Samburu !)

in favour of Amboseli:

a. If you land in Nairobi but go to TZ for safari & prefer overland - it is a nice stop on the way (well, close to)

b. if you'd like to take pictures of elephants (or other game) with Kilimanjaro in the background - this is the place !
a must for Japanese Fuji fans

c. the setting of animals in the swamp
unlike other parks

aby

PS - DUST! - amboseli is a competitor for world record on that feature
