Last Voyage for the QE2
She has ruled the high seas since 1967, but starting next year, 41 years after she was launched, the QE2, arguably the most famous cruise ship ever built, will find a permanent berth in Palm Jameirah in Dubai. Cunard Line announced the $100 million sale of the iconic liner to Dubai World, which owns Palm Jameirah, on Monday.
According to Cunard, the QE2 will become a luxury floating hotel at a pier constructed especially for the QE2. The boat will be refurbished with restaurants and dining establishments and is expected to become a popular tourist destination for Palm Jameirah, the world's largest man-made island.
The QE2 is the longest-serving ship in Cunard's 168-year-history. The ship launched in September 1967, undertook 25 world cruises, crossed the Atlantic more than 800 times, and has carried more than 2.5 million passengers.
