Local legend closes for a makeover...

October 10, 2007

The flagship Filene's Basement store in Boston's Downtown Crossing neighborhood has closed for 18 months for extensive renovations. The original bargain basement discounter was famous for its cavernous space, bins overflowing with discounted wares, "Running of the Brides" bridal sale events, and automatic markdowns on any given date. The company expects the original location to reopen its doors in spring 2009, after much of the above-ground building has been repurposed for luxury retail and residential space. In the interim, shoppers can still find good deals at the alternate Filene's Basement location in Back Bay, at 497 Boylston Street. (617-424-5520; open 9 am to 9 pm Monday through Saturday and 11 to 7 Sundays.)
