Powerful Earthquake Shakes Martinique

November 30, 2007

A powerful 7.2. earthquake shook the Caribbean islands of Martinique and nearby Barbados earlier today. One death, a Briton who suffered a heart attack, has been reported by local officials in Martinique. Many buildings on both islands collapsed, though no casualties have been reported in Barbados.

Early reports indicate that at least half of the island of Martinique is without electricity, and scores of locals and tourists alike have gone to hospitals seeking medical attention for injuries sustained while fleeing from shaking buildings, fallen ceilings, and shattering glass.

The United States Geological Survey told ABC News that although the earthquake was strong, it was so deep under ground that it is unlikely to trigger a tsunami in the region.
