After nearly a decade of false alarms, this legendary prerevolutionary café finally reopened in 2000. Founded in 1908, Cafe Riche was the social headquarters of much of Cairo's theater and literary community (attested to by the portraits of famous artists that now line the walls) and once had a cabaret where Umm Koulthum got her start in 1922. The food, which has not changed much since then, features such standard French-influenced Egyptian grill dishes as entrecote in wine sauce with fries. The steak with pistachios is more innovative (and quite good), while there are all the usual local options, including fatta (a meat or vegetable casserole) and tahina (or tahini). A bar was in the works for a hidden basement vault; you might want to check it out if it's open.
