Planning Your Time
Haifa, the country's third-largest city, can be a useful base for seeing top sights to the south (Caesarea and the wine country) and north (the Crusader city in historic Akko and the coast up to Rosh Hanikra). Ein Hod, an artists' colony, and the Carmel Caves are also nearby. Haifa itself is notable for the Baha'i Gardens and Germany Colony. However, the coast's southern sights can also be seen easily if you're staying in Tel Aviv. Both United and Egged tours have day tours to Caesarea and Akko from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Netanya; this may be a useful option.
Not counting time in Haifa, you could see the area's highlights in a couple of days, starting with King Herod's port city, Caesarea, and the wine country in the Carmel Hills. Check tour information for the wineries in Benyamina and Zichron Ya'akov. The Druze villages of Daliyat el Carmel and Isfiya are worth a visit, too. You can also spend a half or a full day exploring Akko, to the north; the grottoes at Rosh Hanikra are lovely, but far north. Plan time for swimming or hiking; the Mediterranean coast has great beaches and scenic trails.
