Getting Here and Around

To explore the key sites in one day, keep in mind opening times and geography, and plan accordingly. Heading to Dung Gate first thing in the morning will get the Western Wall area and the Temple Mount (Muslim shrines) off the list. Exit the northern end of the mount to the Via Dolorosa and Holy Sepulcher. Jaffa Gate will take you right to the Holy Sepulcher and on to the Western Wall but poses a problem of timing for the Temple Mount. Lions' Gate is best for beginning with the Via Dolorosa, and fine for everything else except the Temple Mount. With some initial walking through the bazaar, Damascus Gate allows you to choose your preferred sequence of sights. Of course, you can spread your visit over more than one day.
