Spiga d'Oro

Spiga d'Oro Review

Located on the fashionable Florida Road, Spiga is something of a Durban institution, and it's not just because it named a dish after regular client and convicted fraudster Shabir Shaik. That said, the Linguine à la Shaik done with a tomato and basil sauce with a touch of chili is perennially popular. Spiga, as it is known to locals, represents the attitude and overall feeling of Durban—it's unpretentious with an animated atmosphere that makes diners feel part of the crowd. The Italian menu is not always classical in its interpretation, but you can count on it being delicious and a good value (pasta dishes come in medium or large portions). And, if you enjoy taking your time when dining, there are no over-zealous staff trying to turn your table. Open from breakfast, the kitchen doesn't close until the early hours of the next morning, when it's constantly abuzz with a steady stream of hungry patrons. Be prepared for a wait.
