A reflection of a nation's wealth, the Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque dominates the center of BSB and is rightly considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the entire Asia-Pacific region. Named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei and built on an artificial lagoon beside the Brunei River, it was completed in 1958. Its Italian marble minarets and ornamental courtyards and fountains show that no expense was spared in its design and construction. The mosque's most recognizable feature is the 170-foot main dome, which is covered in pure gold. A bridge across the lagoon leads to a pavilion designed as a replica of a 16th century royal barge. Non-Muslims can enter the spacious interior when prayers are not in progress to admire the stained glass windows and crystal chandeliers (the latter imported from England). The plush carpets came from Saudi Arabia. You can also take the elevator up the tallest minaret for a panoramic view across the city. The mosque is particularly impressive when floodlit at night.
