Temple of Mystery (Xuanmiao Guan)
Temple of Mystery (Xuanmiao Guan) Review
One of the best-preserved Taoist compounds, the Temple of Mystery backs a large square that is now a lively market. Founded in the 3rd century, the temple is a rare example of a wooden structure that has lasted centuries, with parts from the 12th century. Fortunately, it suffered little damage in the Cultural Revolution, and retains a splendid ceiling of carefully arranged beams and braces painted in their original colors.
