Since 1898 the ferry pier has been the gateway to the island for people from Kowloon. If it's your first time in the city, you're all but required to cross the harbor and back on the Star Ferry at least once. It's a beautiful, relaxing trip on antiquated, characterful vessels. An evening ride is even better, when the city's neon and skyscrapers light up the sky. The distinctive green-and-white vessels are beloved harbor fixtures; many people prefer the gentle, smooth sailing trip to one on the busy MTR. The ferry's home is Pier 7 of the Outlying Islands Ferry Piers.
There are two classes: a first-class ticket (HK$2.20) gives you a seat on the upper deck, with its air-conditioned compartments. Second-class seats (HK$1.70) are on the lower deck and tend to be noisy because they're near the engine room. For very different experiences, try the upper deck one way and the lower deck on the other. For trips from Central to Tsim Sha Tsui, seats on the eastern side have the best views -- the ferries don't turn around, though, so remember to swing the seats so that you face forward.
Across the way, the pier makes a convenient starting point for any tour of Kowloon. (It also has a bus terminal, which sends buses to all parts of Kowloon and to the New Territories.) As you face the bus station, Ocean Terminal, where luxury cruise ships berth, is on your left; inside this terminal, and in adjacent Harbour City, are miles of air-conditioned shopping arcades.
