Hiking

Mt. Yotei. Climbing this Fuji look-alike takes four to six hours. Two trails lead up the mountain: the more-challenging Hirafu Course and the easier but still arduous Makkari Course. It's basically a stairway without switchbacks all the way up. Regardless of your approach, you'll find wildflowers in summer, and elderly Japanese chomping on bamboo shoots that grow wild on the hills. A hut at the top provides crude lodging. To get to the trails, take the bus from JR Kutchan Station 20 minutes to Yotei Tozan-guchi (hiking trail entrance) for the Hirafu Course or 40 minutes to the Yotei Shinzan Koen stop for the Makkari Course.
