Hokkaido Kaitaku-no-mura (Historical Village of Hokkaido)

Hokkaido Kaitaku-no-mura (Historical Village of Hokkaido) Review

Step back into 19th-century Hokkaido and see the herring-fleet dormitory where 60 fishermen appear to have just folded up their futons and left for a day's work; or the village clinic where a Dr. Kondo seems to have vanished, leaving his scary-looking birthing table and books behind. It's easy to spend a few hours walking in and out of 60 homes, shops, farms, and offices brought from all over Hokkaido in a park museum that preserves how ordinary people lived and worked. A ride down the main street in a horse-drawn trolley (summer) or sleigh (winter) costs ¥200. Ask for the excellent, free, blue-color English guide at the ticket counter. The village is about 10 km (6 mi) outside Sapporo; easiest access is via an hour bus ride (¥260) from Sapporo Station on a Japan Rail Bus or a 10-minute taxi ride from Shin-Sapporo Station.
