Tanuki Koji (Tanuki Mall)

Tanuki Koji (Tanuki Mall) Review

A tanuki is kind of like a raccoon crossed with a Tasmanian devil and is known in Japanese mythology for its libidinous nature. Tanuki Koji got its name because the area used to be frequented by prostitutes. Now a different breed of merchant in this kitschy covered arcade is eager to lighten the wallets of passersby, with small shops selling clothing, footwear, electronics, records, and touristy, Ainu-inspired souvenirs of Hokkaido. Tanuki Koji has considerably lower prices than the area's department stores. It's also the place to find Hokkaido specialties, from melon confections to dried salmon and seaweed, as well as the occasional belting street performer.
