Across the street from Nijo-jo, Kokusai provides excellent views of the castle from the rooftop lounge and rooms on the west side, and is only a few yards from the entrance to the Nijo-jo-mae stop on the Tozai subway line. Perhaps the best reason to choose this hotel is the Lounge Miyabi, where a large glass window looks out onto a beautiful courtyard garden. A stage with a thatched roof and lacquered flooring floats on the garden's pond. In the daytime you can relax with matcha and a sweet and watch a swan swim across the pond. At night, have your picture taken with a maiko. Then take your seat either inside or outside to watch her perform two dances on the floating stage. Though the rooms still retain an elegance with window-side armchairs, the silken duvets are decidedly outmoded.
