Fodor's Review:

The Miyako, grande dame of Kyoto hotels, first opened in the early 1900s. Perched atop Mt. Kacho near the eastern temples, the hotel has a walking trail, several Japanese gardens, and indoor and outdoor pools (free for guests). Twenty Japanese-style rooms in two annexes retain the feel of a traditional ryokan. Western-style rooms in the south wing are large and tastefully furnished. Other Western-style rooms that were not recently renovated are smaller and tired, but less expensive. A free shuttle bus runs to Kyoto Station via the downtown shopping district, a 20-minute ride. There is a satellite concierge at the Hachijo Exit of the station, where you can check in and drop off your bags.

  • Hotel Details: 300 Western-style rooms, 20 Japanese-style rooms
  • In-room: Internet.
  • In-hotel: 9 restaurants, bars, pools, gym.
  • Credit Cards: AE, DC, MC, V

Disappointed

With all the guide books recommending this hotel above all the rest it was an easy decision and my expectations were high for my first visit to Kyoto. The hotel was a disappointment in every respect. I would recommend it only to large tour groups, wedding parties and conventions. Definitely not for the traveler looking for superior comfort and extraordinary service. A decent hotel but unworthy of its lofty reputation and hefty price tag.

A great experience

This is a fantastic hotel! Our rooms had beautiful views and were perfectly appointed. The mountain in back of the hotel was fun to climb with my eight-year-old son. The health club and pool were spotless. The breakfast and dinner buffet were delicious. The service was excellent, delivered with plenty of style. Temples and the city zoo were a short walk away. I'd recommend this place to anyone.
