Visitor Information

Every major city has tourist information offices near shopping, sightseeing, and eating areas, and one or more near the high-speed train exit of each JR train station. Generally, one English speaker is on duty during peak travel hours. The bigger hotels usually have front-desk employees who speak and understand some English; they are good sources for information on local sights and restaurant recommendations.
