South Along the Mekong
Bus Travel
Local bus service connects all the towns on Highway 13, from Vientiane or Pakse. VIP buses traveling the Vientiane-Pakse route do not stop in the small towns; they will stop in Savannakhet and Tha Kaek, but they'll charge you the full fare to Vientiane or Pakse and you'll arrive in the middle of the night. Local buses depart hourly until midday for Savannakhet, Tha Kaek, Paksan, and all other destinations along the Mekong from Pakse's Northern Bus Station (about five hours; 45,000 kip) and from Vientiane's Southern Bus Station.
