Cooking Classes

Some of the best dining is done in a Thai cooking class. You won't be an expert even after a five-day course, but you can learn the fundamentals and some of the history of Thai cuisine. You can also find specialty classes that focus on things like fruit-carving (where the first lesson learned is that it's more difficult than it looks) or hot-and-spicy soups. All cooking schools concentrate on practical dishes that students will be able to make at home, and all revolve around having fun and the joy of eating. Most classes are small enough to allow individual attention and time for questions. Prices vary from B2,000 to more than B10,000.

The Oriental Cooking School (48 Oriental Ave., across from Oriental Hotel, Thonburi. 02/236-0400) is the most established school, but far from being stuffy, it's fun and informative. Classes are taught in a beautiful century-old house.

The Landmark Cooking School (02/254-0404 Ext. 4823) is also very good. Both daylong and week-long courses are offered.

The Manohra Song (02/476-0021) offers half-day classes that include a "field trip" to the market.
