Gulf Coast Beaches: Places to Explore

Koh Samui

Koh Samui is the most popular tourist destination on the Western Gulf coast, which isn't surprising, considering Samui's gorgeous beaches, perfect weather, and sparkling blue, almost turquoise, water. Samui has been developed quite rapidly since the mid 1990s, but there's still a good variety of experiences to choose from. You can find beaches in all stages of development and hotels in all price ranges. If you can't find what you want on Samui, take a boat to Koh Phangan, a more natural island that draws backpackers, new-age types, hippies, and just about everyone to its Full Moon Festival, or to Koh Tao, a scuba hot spot.

Koh Samui is half the size of Phuket, so you could easily drive around it in a day. But Samui is best appreciated by those who take a slower, more casual approach. Most people come for the sun and sea, so they head straight to their hotel and rarely venture beyond the beach where they are staying. And if you're staying at one of the more opulent hotels you won't want to leave—trust us. However, every beach has its own unique character, and with a little exploration you may find the one most suitable for you.
