The Eastern Gulf

The Eastern Gulf

The Eastern Gulf has long been a favorite escape from the heat and humidity of Bangkok. Its proximity to the capital means that weekend trips are possible, which in turn means that the area is overrun with sunseekers during long or holiday weekends. As the capital becomes more and more congested and its residents more affluent with disposable income, the region is growing rapidly. Some of the closer beaches have become so crowded that people now continue down the coast to quieter shores.

Many people go no farther than the coastal city of Pattaya, less than two hours south of Bangkok, which is both a notorious commercial sex hub and a popular weekend beach retreat for Bangkok residents. Pattaya is the most highly developed area in the Eastern Gulf–too much so, it seems, as two consecutive prime ministers have criticized the area as a good example of the evils of unchecked development. For years now the city has been cleaning up its beaches and its act, but it remains an eyesore to many people. But if you're looking for raucous entertainment, this is the spot, and the new world-class Sheraton resort just outside the city provides some isolation from the seedier, more frenetic side of Pattaya.

Head farther south and east for more tranquil environs. Koh Chang, Thailand's second-largest island after Phuket, has started to experience the tourism onslaught and although the pressures to overbuild are strong, at this writing it remains a charming and beautiful island.
