A meal at Rockpool is a crash course in what Mod-Oz cooking is all about, conducted in a glamorous, long dining room with a catwalklike ramp. Chefs Neil Perry and Khan Danis weave Thai, Chinese, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern influences into their repertoire with effortless flair and originality. Prepare to be amazed by the lobster tagine with spice-stuffed dates, eggplant salad, and couscous. Try to snag one of the limited portions of slow-roasted aged beef with anchovy-spice butter, spinach puree, and potato and cabbage gratin. Don't miss the date tart for dessert. Tasting menus (including a vegetarian menu) are also available (A$150-$A175).

If you're a meateater, don't bother with Rockpool. If you love fish, you'll like it a lot. Interesting selections and each can be prepared in several ways. On the downside, we thought the service was perfunctory, chairs uncomfortable, and a bit noisy.
